We encourage you to speak openly with your healthcare providers and to be actively involved in choices concerning your treatment. You can contribute to safe care by asking questions when something is unclear or not what you expected.
You have the right
- To considerate, compassionate care in a safe environment, taking into account your needs and feelings and based on mutual respect, regardless of your age, gender, race, origin, religion, sexual orientation or disability.
- To know the names of the doctor in charge of your treatment and of the doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals who treat or care for you.
- To understandable information about your examination or treatment. If you do not understand the information provided to you, you can request the assistance of an interpreter free of charge. If you are hearing or visually impaired, we offer the necessary aids to be able to inform you properly.
- To information from your doctor on your diagnosis and likely prognosis, the advantages and disadvantages of treatment, the expected outcome of treatment, including unexpected outcomes and possible alternative treatments. Your verbal consent is required for every procedure, examination and blood transfusion, unless you are unable to give consent in an emergency situation. Your doctor will record your consent in your patient record. We assume your consent for simple procedures such as taking blood, an injection and making an X-ray, unless you indicate otherwise.
- To our attention for any pain you may experience and your involvement in pain management.
- To our full respect for the confidentiality of conversations about your care and your privacy during examinations and treatments.
- To be accompanied by a family member or close relative during your treatment or stay in hospital, unless the presence of the person accompanying you would compromise your treatment or rights or those of others. You have the right to refuse visitors at any time.
- To make decisions concerning your care and treatment together with your doctor, and your family and friends if you wish. You have the right to refuse a treatment or examination. If you leave the hospital against your doctor's advice, the hospital and the doctor are not responsible for the medical consequences of you leaving hospital prematurely.
- To appoint a legal representative who can make decisions for you regarding your treatment, if you are no longer able to do so yourself. We can explain to you how to appoint a legal representative. For children less than 16 years of age and for patients who are legally incompetent, the healthcare provider must inform a legal representative and request his/her permission for treatment.
- To choose whether or not to participate in medical research. You may withdraw your consent at any time without giving reasons. This will not affect your normal medical care at Isala in any way.
- To be involved in planning your discharge from hospital. You will be told in good time when you will be discharged to your home or an institution for follow-up care or transferred to another department in the hospital. Before you are discharged, you will be informed about the reason for your admission, use of medication, rules to follow and any follow-up care you may require. We will send your family doctor information about your stay in the hospital, so that he/she can take over your care when you get home.
- To information about costs you have to pay to the hospital or the physician, outside of your deductible.
- To view your patient record. You can obtain a copy of your patient record and a CD-ROM with X-ray images for a fee. You can submit a written request for this information to our privacy offer. Information about the procedure can be found here.
- To a second opinion from a doctor in another hospital. The doctor in charge of your treatment can provide you with more information on this.
- To have your medical data handled with due care. Your data will only be accessible to the healthcare providers involved in your treatment. They are bound by professional confidentiality.
- To give or refuse your consent for photographs, audio or video recordings that are not related to your medical care. If you take photographs or make recordings in the hospital yourself, you must always request the permission of those you are photographing or recording.
- To spiritual care. The spiritual carers can also provide guidance with regard to questions about ethical matters. They are available in the hospital during office hours. There is a spiritual carer on call outside of office hours. Ask your nurse for more information.
- To express your concerns if you are not satisfied with the treatment or care you receive. If you have a problem or a complaint, talk to the operational manager or your physician first. You can also contact the complaints officer. She can be contacted at 038 424 4727 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. You can also submit your complaint in writing at www.isala.nl/klacht
- In order to provide you with good care and information, it is important that we know who you are and with which health insurance company you are insured. It is also important that we know which medications you use. Therefore, always bring a valid ID, your health insurance card and a Current Medication Overview with you to the hospital. A Current Medication Overview (Actueel Medicatie Overzicht) can be obtained from your pharmacy.
- Your healthcare provider wants to provide you with the best possible care and treatment. Therefore it is important to inform him/her fully. Otherwise, the healthcare provider will be unable to make a proper diagnosis and provide effective treatment. It is important to follow the advice of your healthcare provider.
- We expect you to treat our hospital staff with respect. Aggression to our staff—in any form whatsoever—will not be tolerated. We will report incidents of aggression to the police as and when necessary.
- We expect you to keep appointments and to arrive on time. If you wish to cancel an appointment, please let us know at least 24 hours beforehand.
